The Word of God’s Breath (Ὁ Λόγος Πνοῆς Θεοῦ)
Before there was ink, before anything was written on stone, and before there were any kind of systems of communication — there was only the Word of God. In fact, in John1:1-5 we are told that in the beginning was the Word and that the Word was God. But most people wrongly think that the Word of God is merely inspirational, when in fact, it is LIFE GIVING as John points out. This incorrect belief that the Word of God is inspirational has been taught and passed down from generation to generation from Jewish Tradition and from faulty Catholic translations. The Jewish people reasoned that the books of scripture were not written by one man at one single point in time but by many men over a long period of time. This belief the Jews held was picked up by Catholics and passed on from generation to generation of Catholics due to Catholics mistranslating scriptures. So how and why was the Word of God mistranslated as “Inspired”? Well, as we previously stated, the notion that the scriptures were inspired began with the Jews. But it didn’t end there. The answer lies in how a Catholic named Jerome translated the Greek into Latin around 405AD. In 2 Timothy 3:16, Jerome used: “Omnis scriptura divinitus inspirata est…”, which means “All scripture is divinely inspired…”. But that is where he went wrong. You see, “Inspirata” comes from Latin Inspirare which means “to breath into”. But that is not what Theoponeustos means. The Greek translation means breathed out by God, not breathed into. Do you see the difference? Theopneustos means breathed out by God, while Inspirata means breathed into the writer. What this does is shift 2 Timothy 3:16 from God as the source of life and salvation to man choosing for himself what is divine and what is not divine. This shaped centuries of Catholic Theology. But then came the English translations. The King James Version (1611) followed the Latin lead and translated it as, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God…”. And from that moment on, inspiration became the standard. A standard that wasn’t just used by Catholics and Jews but was also picked up by the Protestants. But although Catholics, Jews, and Protestants use inspired, it is not correct and thus renders the Latin and all subsequent translations as incorrect, faulty and utterly useless. Due to this mistranslation by Catholics, jews, and Protestants, it completely takes away Gods life giving nature and makes the Word of God solely a human option, a choice that can be disregarded and changed to suit man’s desires at will. This changes the Word of God. rendering it passive and not active which is a clear departure from John1. That change from active to passive takes away Gods life giving breath, and instead of the Word of God being life giving and authoritative, it places the authority to understand it into the hands of man. It allows man to decide what is divine and what is not. And that is a fundamental problem with the Catholic and Protestant Religions. This forces Catholics to look to the Catholic Church for understanding as opposed to God. It is the Catholic church that controls who knows God, instead of God Himself. But the truth is John 1:1-5 tells us that the Word created everything and that the Word is God. So, it is impossible to translate Theopneustos as inspirational when John 1 tells us exactly what is Theopneustos. Furthermore, if we were to use the Catholic and Protestant translation of 2 Timothy 3:16, ” All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”, then we would run into a problem. If the Word of God were not life giving, then it would certainly be life taking as we shall see. Unless scripture were life giving, then it could not be of any use to teach it, to use for refutation, for correction, or for training in righteousness. Because the Catholic and Protestant translations declare Theopneustos to be inspirational then it leaves the Word open to man choosing and deciding what is beneficial to him. It would be impossible to teach, refute, correct, or to train a man of God if he can solely pick and choose what is inspirational. And that is why if you use Catholic and Protestant translations of Theopneustos it does not lead to life but leads to death. Instead of listening and obeying God, mankind is led astray following man’s own desires. The translation of inspiration removes God from His position and places man above God. Thus making man, god.
That is what is so freeing, and that is what the Good News is all about, the fact that the Word of God is alive and LIFE GIVING , and that it frees Christians from their sins and bondage to another man. It declares that there is only one mediator between God and man, and that is Christ Jesus. The Word of God is (Theopneustos) LIFE GIVING because it takes away your sins and unites you with God, something Catholicism and Protestantism can’t do. Sin on the other hand is life taking, and separates you from God, a fact that Catholicism and Protestantism cannot deny, nor can they resolve doctrinally. Sin is the very reason why Catholics and Protestants cannot read the Word of God and understand it. In 1 John 3:6, we are told that sinners do not know God or understand Him. This creates a problem for Catholics, Protestants and anyone else who are sinners. Sin separates sinners from God. But although sin separates sinners from God, Catholics and Protestants alike continue to open up their bibles and claim to understand them. This is the problem with the Latin translation of Theopneustos, because once the Word of God is translated to mean inspired then it opens the door for man to be the authority over God instead of God being the authority. This led to religious institutions like the Catholic Church to be the gatekeepers of God, and only allowing those who Aline with the Catholic Church to receive Him. But Theopneustos is not inspired which means that it is Life Giving and that God speaks for Himself. This creates a severe problem for Catholics and Protestants alike because if Theopneustos is merely inspired then that means that man decides and dictates everything to God. But can the creature dictate to the Creator? No! The Creator is the only one that can dictate. This demonstrates man’s folly. Man has allowed sin to control him and separate him from God. This is proof that the Catholic and Protestant religions are incorrect, because instead of following God they are following themselves. Thus, making themselves God. Catholics and Protestants have removed God from their lives and made themselves their own God. This is what separates Christians from Catholics, Protestants and everyone else in the world. Christians stand under the Word while the world sits in judgment of the Word. This is why the Word of God is active and not passive, because it is a shield. Proverbs 30:5, “Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.” In fact, John1:4 tells us that, “The Word gave life to everything that was created.”. The word Theopneustos (θεόπνευστος) appears in 2 Timothy 3:16, and it’s often translated in English Bibles as “inspired by God” or “God-breathed.”
Greek Breakdown:
- θεός (Theos) = God
- πνέω (pneō) = to breathe or blow
- So θεόπνευστος (Theopneustos) = God-breathed, or more dynamically, God-breathing
Traditional Interpretation (Passive):
Most translations have taken Theopneustos to mean that Scripture is inspired by God — that God is the source, and Scripture is the product (i.e., inspired). This view sees it as passive: God breathes, and the text receives that breath, like dictation or divine origin.
But that passive idea of “inspiration” isn’t actually how breath works in Greek usage or in Hebrew thought. Breath is active — it gives life. And in biblical theology, God’s breath is often synonymous with His Spirit (Ruach in Hebrew, Pneuma in Greek).
A More Accurate Understanding: Life-Giving Word
Theopneustos means life-giving, Spirit-infused, — and that’s far more consistent with the Bible’s internal theology.
- Genesis 2:7 — God breathes into Adam, and Adam becomes a living soul.
- John 6:63 — Jesus says, “The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life.”
- Hebrews 4:12 — “The Word of God is living and active…”
This is not passive inspiration. It is living participation — a God-breathing, present, powerful force.
Implications:
It doesn’t just inform — it transforms. In 2 Timothy 3:16 the Author of Life uses the word Theopneustos 1 time, and he never repeated it since. Unfortunately, the word Theopneustos has been mistakenly translated by Catholics and many others to mean inspired by God when in fact it means Life Giving. Outside of the Bible, the word Theopneustos has been used in other documents including Sibylline Oracles, Testament of Abraham, and Pseudo- Plutarch. And in all of the secular translations, Theopneustos is translated as Life Giving and never as inspired by God. But although we have secular texts to prove this point, we do not need to look any further than John 6:68, when Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life.”. The implications are enormous because if the Word of God is just inspirational, then there can be no salvation through them. This is a fundamental belief that separates Catholicism and Protestantism from Christianity. But we are told in Hebrews 4:12 that, ” The Word of God is alive and powerful. We are even told in Romans 10:17 , “So Faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.” That verb “hearing” (ἀκοή) is not passive listening. It’s encountering a voice that speaks now. The Word isn’t a mere message from long ago — it’s a living Person’s voice, breathing through the Word. This speaks to the core of the problem. Most people have no faith. They are sincere in thinking that they do have faith when all along they have none at all. And that is because people view the Word of God as solely inspirational. If a person only views the Word Of God as inspirational then it would be impossible for them to have faith. If the Word is just inspirational, then:
- It motivates, but it doesn’t convict.
- It encourages, but it doesn’t pierce (Heb. 4:12).
- It uplifts, but it doesn’t resurrect.
- It appeals to emotion, but it doesn’t generate new life.
That’s not faith. That’s admiration. That’s sentiment.
Faith requires Theopneustos — the Word as God breathing, not God having breathed.
It is impossible to have true faith if someone views the Word of God as merely inspirational. Faith is awakened by divine breath, not by emotional uplift.
A Word that is not breathing cannot birth faith.
Only the living Word can call forth a living response. Notice how John1:1-5 tells us, “In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” The Word of God’s Breath is not a law to memorize or a creed to recite. It is the living voice of God, carried on Spirit-breath, reuniting hearts to God in real time. Solo Theopneustos calls us back to this original voice — the Word that does not come from man but flows directly from the breath of God Himself. The breath that gave Adam life still speaks, and it still calls out to us today. Let His breath be enough.
The Scripture wasn’t just inspired once long ago — it’s always breathing and it will continue to breath for all time. This is why the gates of Hell cannot prevail against us (Matthew 16:18), “and upon this rock I will build my church”. The Word (John 1:1-5) ,”In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through Him, and nothing was created except through Him. The Word gave life to everything it created.” God is the source of all creation and nothing can or ever will be superior to God, the creator of all.
It doesn’t merely contain divine ideas — it radiates divine life. Matthew 5:16 ,”In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
This is why the Lord said in John5:39-40, “You search the scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the scriptures point to me!Yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life.” Jesus is teaching that the Word of God is not inspirational but Life Giving because it points to Him.
Let the Breath of God Be Enough
Before the law, before religion, before shame — there was the Word. Solo Theopneustos is not a new doctrine or new theology, but God’s covenant, written not on stone, but on the hearts of those made alive by His Spirit.
